FROM HOTEL TERMINUS TO DUKE STUDIO HOTEL

Architect Houben / Van Mierlo: Hotel T is located on Boschveldweg in the center of ’s-Hertogenbosch, on the site of the current Hotel Terminus. Its central location in the station area makes it the ideal spot for a short-stay hotel.

The building is nestled between two large apartment complexes, with which it forms a single block. The building’s L-shaped layout completes the street front and creates space for a green patio. The sculptural, expressive facade offers a pleasant contrast to the austere architecture of the adjacent apartment buildings. The inner courtyard has a softer appearance that blends in with the surrounding buildings.

The hotel consists of 34 guest rooms spread over five floors. The striking canopy is visible from the station and marks the building’s main entrance. The adjacent patio and the guest rooms are accessed from here. The simple layout of the circulation system gives the building a clear structure.

The inspiration for the new facade stems from an analysis of the existing facade and its position within the street frontage. We used the proportions revealed by this analysis to design the new facade. We then refined the formal, austere overall design of the facade by incorporating elements with a distinctive design language. By reinterpreting an existing principle, we have preserved the character of the old hotel.

The light-colored masonry blends in with the adjacent facades along the street and is complemented by the light beige brick piers. The open-cornered interlocking masonry of the piers creates a sculptural, distinctive facade. The modern use of traditional materials and proportions situates the building within its historical context and gives it a contemporary look.
